It&#8217;s hard to believe we could have anymore rain after the month we\u2019ve had here over in the UK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just this week, two of the three roads that lead in and out of our village were flooded. That, along with a nasty virus that hit our home this month and the multiple changes in plans left me feeling pretty deflated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>January can be a tough month for many of us and as many of you will know the wet weather didn\u2019t help this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1613\" src=\"https:\/\/thislittlelighthouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1000028231-1440x1613.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thislittlelighthouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1000028231-1440x1613.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/thislittlelighthouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1000028231-scaled-600x672.jpg 600w, https:\/\/thislittlelighthouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1000028231-300x336.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thislittlelighthouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1000028231-1371x1536.jpg 1371w, https:\/\/thislittlelighthouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1000028231-1828x2048.jpg 1828w, https:\/\/thislittlelighthouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1000028231-800x896.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully we\u2019re at the point in the year when we have the lighter evenings to look forward to and all of the anticipation and new life that Spring brings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Looking forward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday in my stories on Instagram, I said that if you could relate to struggling in January, I hoped you could take some time to reflect on what has gone well, what you and your children have enjoyed, and what you are looking forward to in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all need things to look forward to!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I thought I\u2019d share with you what we\u2019ve enjoyed and if you are willing to share, please do comment below with your highlights from January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Morning poetry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the Christmas break, we\u2019ve slowly got back into the rhythm of reading the Bible most days over breakfast as well as poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually I would choose a poet for the term for us to focus on, but this term I decided that instead we\u2019d read from a selection from a few of our favourite poetry books, alongside a page from the seasonal Ladybird book&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/14314\/9780241416228\">What to Look For in Winter<\/a>&nbsp;by Elizabeth Jenner most days:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/14314\/9780857637703\">I Am the Seed That Grew the Tree<\/a>&nbsp;(A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/14314\/9781788005678\">Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright!<\/a>&nbsp;(An Animal Poem for Every Day of the Year)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/14314\/9780241284568\">Flower Fairies of the Winter<\/a>&nbsp;by Cicely Mary Barker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And a new one for us called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/14314\/9780711254589\">The B on Your Thumb<\/a>&nbsp;which covers spelling rules, sounds and silent letters in 60 poems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mr Popper&#8217;s Penguins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have really enjoyed our read aloud for Language Arts:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/14314\/9780316058438\">Mr Popper&#8217;s Penguins<\/a>&nbsp;by Florence and Richard Atwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d originally bought it on my Kindle a few years ago and tried reading it to the girls, but back then they really weren&#8217;t interested. It\u2019s quite lighthearted, funny &#8211; who can imagine having a penguin as a pet?! &#8211; and a much easier read than the Chronicles of Narnia, our previous read aloud, so a refreshing break!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exploring Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For geography this year we are doing a trip around Europe where each week we \u2018visit\u2019 a different country. We find it on the map, make notes about the capital city, population, the languages spoken and more on our fact-file sheet. Then we learn a bit about the culture, the cuisine and various other aspects depending on the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t seen already, I am releasing the resources I&#8217;ve created for each country on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ko-fi.com\/thislittlelighthouse\">Ko-fi<\/a>&nbsp;for people to download for free, or a donation if you are able to support my work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This past week we\u2019ve been in Finland and it\u2019s been fascinating! I think the Finnish have it right in so many ways with their love of coffee, pastries, ice swimming (followed by a trip to the sauna to warm up), and their attitude too! With a growing desire for outdoor adventures and the opportunity to take our learning outdoors more often.
